Forum: Hybrid Bicycles

Where else would you go to discuss these fun, versatile bikes?

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Safety Recall for Trek 7xxxx series

Not sure it's the right place to post. But there's a recall on these bikes. They look hybrid to me. http://www.healthycanadians.ca/pr-rp/recall-retrait_e.php?langCd=eng&searchTyp=1&re_id=757&searchstring=&searchyear=2009&searchcategory=&StartIndex=1

  1. Cost to upgrade to disc brakes

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my cantilever brakes to discs. I'm trying to figure out about how much it would cost to do both or just the front. I believe I'd need a new fork with disc mounts built on, then the disc system itself. Is there anything else that needs to be replaced to...

  2. perhaps Hybrid bound

Dyed in the wool road biker here but I took my wifes Specialized Hard Rock out the other night to adjust the shifters and found that I had ridden furthur with more enjoyment and less pain than I do on my Paramount...what does this mean?? Then, to put a nail in this particular coffin..I live in...

  3. Redline Mono 9 question...

It's basically a 9-2-5 with riser bars, fenders and 1x9 drivetrain and 700c wheels...would this be considered a "Hybrid"? I don't know how to insert the link directly to the bike, but it can be seen on RL's website (www.redlinebicycles.com/). Anybody here own one? If so,how's she ride and got any...

  4. Norco VFR 4 or Cannondale Quick5?

I am able to get one of these for about the same price. The Quick 5 is 2 yrs younger than the VFR 4. The VFR 4 seems to be the more $$$ when new. Likely due to the discs brakes which I don't really care since it is for commuting. Not to mention the discs will add to the overall weight. What do you...

  7. My fenderized Sirrus with Tiagra FD!

Well, I finally got a few quick snapshots of my Sirrus with the Planet Bike Hardcore road fenders on, along with the Tiagra FD-4503 front derailleur (put in stock # for anyone wishing to give their Sirrus more room for fenders). The Tiagra FD gives a LOT more room, and my pictures dont show how...

  8. Univega VIA Carisma - what year is it?

A friend was just given this bike, and he'd like to know what year it is. It's silver and blue (silver at the front, blue at the back). It's definitely 98 or earlier; it doesn't have the adjustable stem. The first mention of silver I found on bikepedia.com earlier than 98 was 96, but even then...

great commuter bike- i just took it in for a 2500 mile service (i purchased it in April). i needed new brake pads and a new chain, other than than my lbs said the bike looked great i had some initial concerns about the durability of the paired spoke wheels but they've held up well- no broken...

  10. Hybrid on a Trail?

I have a Trek 7100 that I have been using primarily on paved roads with some gravel. It has stock 35mm tires. I have found some old logging roads which look interesting to explore. They are essentially flat but with lots of pot holes, debris, and small amounts of vegetation. Basically a mountain...

  12. Giant Acapulco for a Hybrid?

Hi all, I have a mountain bike that I use for single track trails, but I was wondering if you thought this would be a good bike for rail-trails and around the neighborhood. It's a Giant Acapulco, not sure of the year, for $50. I was going to put slicker tires on it. I'm not sure how good the...

That Cafe Doppio from their Metro Itallia series is calling my name. I'm loving that dark roast color. A bit pricey, but it looks really tight. Hmmm...:D

  15. Brake adjustment

Just bought a new Raleigh Detour 3.5 and of course it was all tuned up for me at the shop before I left with it. The thing is, in order to fit it in the car, I had to take off the front wheel. The shop guy showed me how to take it off and put it back on real quick and I remembered how but I don't...

  16. Bravo Shimano!

I bought my hybrid in 2002. Main usage wintertime trainer in all sorts of sloppy weather and salty roads. I could say it has been treated as a no good beater bike. Today one does not expect good value for your money but Hey! That Acera group & rear derailleur have functioned just flawless! Not one...

  18. Putting the Hybrid on the Bench

Less than 4 months after the purchase of my 2009 Trek 7.2 FX and getting into biking, my hybrid has been demoted to backup. Based on my budget and forum postings, it sounded like the perfect bike for my daily 18 mile round-trip commute. However, a few rides on the 1986 Schwinn Prelude road bike...

  19. 7.2 Chain Jamming, Seat Hurting

I've got a 7.2 FX with less than 100 miles on it. The chain has an annoying habit of jamming itself when I try to shift the front derailleur while pedaling up hill, or when pedaling with a lot of force in general. Is this normal? And what is the advantage of a hard seat? I find it really...
