Forum: Utility Cycling

Want to haul groceries, beer, maybe even your kids? You don't have to live car free to put your bike to use as a workhorse. Here's the place to share and learn about the bicycle as a utility vehicle.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: The post your trailer thread.

Post them if you got em'! I'll start with mine. Based on http://www.bikesacrossborders.org/diy/trailer.html . Finally something to use those steel 27's on. The box is 132gal which is enough for whatever I would need to carry, yet I could mount another one up front if I needed to. ...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Post your utility bike thread

Eh, you know how these threads go. So here's my Suteki, built with love and mostly garbage. I wanted a bike that would fit me like a glove, be about as practical as can be and not attractive to theives. So I've put this bike together around early summer, but I've been changing stuff around a...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: home built xtracycle...

So I'm going to build an xtracycle style rig out of two (maybe more) old mountain bikes and I have a few questions for xtracycle owners. How far is it from the bottom bracket to the rear axle? How far is it from the top of the snap deck to the rear axle? How high is the bottom bracket with...

  4. Sticky Thread Sticky: The post your bike move/bike haul thread

Hey guys, I am going to attempt my first car-free move this weekend. Its nice b/c I'm moving from the top of a hill to the bottom. I have enlisted a couple friends with bikes to help. We have bikes/racks, but no trailers. I don't have any "big" things, but I do have a couple bulky items. ...

  5. Sticky Thread Sticky: Trailer Construction Tips

Here's a few of rules of thumb I've developed through experimentation over the years that work for me.... 1. Look at the point where the trailer hitches to the bike, and the points at which the trailer's wheels touch the ground. They form a triangle, right? OK, you want to keep the sides of the...

  1. homebrew xtracycle builders, how much for your swingarm?

These questions goes out to to all the folks who have or are working on making their own longtail bike. How much did you spend on your full suspension donor bike swingarm/rear triangle? Where did you get it? I have been bitten by the longtail bug and have been acquiring parts for 4...

  2. good low-BB base bike for an xtracycle?

Can anyone recommend older rigid MTBs with a low BB for my xtracycle? The Marin MTB I'm using now has very little BB drop, which would be great for clearing stumps, but I'd rather have something more stable for a cargo bike.

  3. Homemade rear racks - long bike setups

I've built a home-made xtracycle and easy logic let me to mount two rear racks back to back to build a rear cargo carrier. I'm not thrilled with the height of what I have (right now sits about 3" above the rear wheel, which is a 26" mtb setup) and I could re-do the same setup making it a bit...

OK, "Coroplast" is a trademark, it refers to a kind of Corrugated Plastic. (It's a lot like Corrugated Cardboard, but it's plastic, so it doesn't disitegrate when it gets wet.) Let me see if I can post photographs, which I took yesterday, 31 October, 2009: Side View:...

Interesting modern take on the Dutch city bike design. http://austinontwowheels.org/2009/11/17/cannondale-enters-city-bike-fray-with-dutchess-concept-bike/ No word on whether this will ever be a product for sale.

My inquiry a few weeks ago about tire width and the Mundo led me to some email discussions w/ the company. A new version (V3) of the Mundo will be released within the next couple weeks. Some of the upcoming changes (taken from emails w/ Ben): disc tabs, front and rear room for larger tires...

I'm about to receive a free tricycle from a friend's mother...and I AM EXCITED! Granted, I'm a 25 year old woman, and this is not the typical ride (especially in NYC!)....but I am already thinking of all the possibilities for the rear basket: deli stops, beer hauling, camera equipment, a...

  11. Scrapfiets

I've been working on this on this nights and weekends for the past couple weeks. I'd been holding onto the rear frame for over a year with a cargo bike in mind. The steering linkage will need to be rebuilt a little stiffer, but overall it rides good. I'm not sure if the handling is poor or if I...

I don't know if you all have noticed but the price of a Big Dummy frame, at the moment, has plummeted. Bikeman has it for $600 Jenson for $700 All sizes available. I bought mine full price and painted it red thinking that the price will just go up. I didn't expect this. Makes me want to...

I live in a strange little city where the only people that typicly ride bikes (olther than $3000 carbon fiber jobbies) are hobos and DWIs, especialy a twenty year old schwinn MTB with a milk-crate trunk-basket. I'm starting to feel persecuted. Even the cops give me a long look over. On the...

  15. Trailer that Works with Raleigh 3-Speeds?

I'm thinking of buying a trailer, to haul my 4-year-old daughter as well as for groceries. I've been prowling craigslist. My wife and I both have Raleigh 3-speeds. The one trailer I looked at attached at the rear axle, using a special skewer. That's not going to work for us. What trailer...

I'd like to add a cargo trailer to my bike, but I really don't want to have to build one. I need something basic and utilitarian to carry lumber for the studio I am building. 17. Ultimate Cargo Bike

So I've been thinking about how to make the ultimate machine for shifting stuff. Someone on the C&V forum has converted one of those huge Wald baskets into a Porteur style front rack, and that made me think, what about an Xtracycle, or more likely either a Surly BigDummy, or one of the ones Kona...

  20. improving Kona Ute

I've had one for a year now, replaced the 170mm double with a 175mm triple and longer stem with bar ends , MKS clipless platform pedals, OMM front rack. I added the front rack because the front end felt too "loosy goosey" with a full tail load but it just doesn't seem right. Anyone else familiar...
