I'm a student at the University of Oklahoma, and I'm working on a class project designing a bike sharing program for campus. This project may turn into a proposal to the administration, after the class is over. My question is: which bikes to use?

The criteria we've decided is important:

Price: $200-$300 per bike (Theft will definitely be an issue)
Cargo: A rear rack, or at least mounts for one
Maintenance: Simple durable mechanisms (single speed/IGH, v-brakes)
Ease of use: Should have some familiarity to riders, even ones who've barely ridden before.

Right now, the best candidate we've come up with is the Electra Townie.

Hello fellow cyclists, friends, and Ride of Silence Organizers.

With Thanksgiving in the USA just around the corner, and Canada having celebrated theirs last month, I'll be giving thanks this year to good health (kinda), that allows me to ride my bike, and to an organization like the Ride of Silence that allows me the opportunity to honor the memory of friends and family who no longer can join us while riding, while clearly raising awareness of cyclists rights on a global scale.

There's a number of things going on, and lot's of changes to the website you should know about.

1st: Our Web-master Tim P. has flipped the switch early. You can begin loading your 2010 Ride info, if you've got it firmed up. Let's get as many loaded as early as possible, for greater visibility to any rider looking for info about a RofS in their city/town/village in 2010. This also makes it easier for Tim come May, when he'll be very....very busy.

2nd: With permission from Mike Murgas in Texas, who penned the Ride of Silence Poem, there is a beautiful song entitled "Ride of Silence". It's sung by Singer & Composer (fellow cyclista from España) Luis Gomez. The youtube video is quite powerful! Personally I'm honored that he chose a number of pictures from our 2009 RofS here in Grand Rapids MI, USA, showing our RofS/Share the Road T-shirts. Check it out here at, and let your cycling friends know:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p7ZkvF_SVI

3rd: I've created a Ride of Silence Cause on Facebook. Please consider joining and ask your friends and fellow cyclists to join also. Let's continue to get the word out. There's an emotional string of posts about an up and coming 18 year old cyclist, who sadly is no longer with us.

http://apps.facebook.com/causes/3318...29?m=6987e7df#

4th: We loaded a new 2010 International Ride of Silence Brochure, multilingual (8.5 X 14 - 1/4 fold) to the website. It can be edited for any location worldwide, we simply ask you to follow the guidelines listed. I've used this format for Michigan locations for a couple of years, Ride of Silence Founder Chris P. liked it and asked that I create a worldwide version. I've distributed the MI version to bike shops, cycling events, tours, health clubs, etc. I can make a few suggestions to help lower printing costs. You can find it here:

http://www.rideofsilence.org/resources.php

Lastly: Continue to check out the website, there's lots of new information, and Tim continues to update it regularly.

Hope you're all getting a few rides in, before the snow hits. (not for me, still recovering from the H1N1 flu :-(

Stay safe out on the road.

Thankfully the cyclists was not killed and is in stable condition. The moron driver was stupid enough to admit he was texting... and therefore swerved and hit the cyclist. The icing on the cake is that the text message was was regarding a drug deal. At least he'll get some serious time for the drug bust. Who knows if they would have even ticketed the driver if there wasn't any drug related issue... but at least he won't be walking away from this crash with just a light slap on the wrist:thumb:
Happy riding,
MEDFORD, N.J. – Police say a man who drove his car into a New Jersey cyclist had been sending a text message about a drug deal.
Authorities say 42-year-old Lisa Granert of Cherry Hill was riding her bike and wearing a reflective vest in Medford after 6 p.m. Monday night.

Police say 28-year-old Robert Sharrer of Pemberton told them he was texting when his vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and crashed into Granert. Police say she suffered head injuries and was flown to a trauma unit. She was in stable condition Tuesday.

Police say Sharrer's text was about a drug deal.

Authorities say they found unauthorized prescription drugs in Sharrer's car and charged him with drug possession. They say he'll also be charged in the collision. Police did not know whether Sharrer had an attorney.

Council to Consider Bicycle Registration

by KYW's Mike Dunn

The ongoing jockeying among cars, bicycles and pedestrians in Philadelphia took a tragic twist in recent weeks with the deaths of two pedestrians who were struck by bicycles. Now, city council may look at requiring the registration of bikes so cyclists who cause accidents can be tracked down.

City councilman Frank DiCicco says countless pedestrians are struck by bicyclists and rarely does the cyclist stop:
"When someone's struck by a bicycle, all you know is its someone on a bike, and the bicyclist takes off."

His colleague Jim Kenney says the deaths of the two pedestrians highlight the need to restore some order:

"There are elements that refuse to follow the rules, refuse to stay in the bike lane, swerve in and out of traffic during rush hour."

So DiCicco on Thursday will propose that a bill that would institute mandatory bicycle registration:

"My bill would require everyone who operates a bicycle over the age of 12 to have his or her bicycle registered. Because we'll at least have a tag, which we can identify in case there is an accident."

Kenney meantime will propose increasing the fines for riding bicycles on the sidewalks. The current fine is ten dollars. Kenney wants it at $300. He also wants the current three dollar fine for wearing headphones while on a bicycle to also increase to 300 dollars:

"We've had a center city death and a South Philadelphia death, and god knows how many other injuries that have gone unreported. People's health and safety -- and life -- is in the balance with this."

Its unclear whether police or another agency would be responsible for enforcing the new measures. The ideas will be debated in committee.

Kenney will also propose penalties for bicyclists who remove brakes from their vehicles, a practice that he says is suddenly gaining in popularity. He suggests either a $1,000 fine for those operating bicycles without brakes, or a penalty of forfeiture of the bike.

KYW's Steve Tawa reports the legislation comes as more folks are riding bicycles in Philadelphia, some of whom are clearly violating traffic laws, according to Philadelphia police.

It is written into the motor vehicle code and enforcement will be stepped up in the next couple of weeks:

"We're not targeting the family on a Sunday trying to get to Fairmount Park on their bikes, and they coast through a stop sign."

Philadelphlia police Sergeant Ray Evers says they'll stop egregious violators:

"We're looking for people on bikes causing hazards to motor vehicles and pedestrians."

They include cyclists careening along sidewalks, making pedestrians jump out of the way, or going the wrong way on streets, forcing vehicles to screech on their brakes.

Evers says police are working with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia to get the word out, during an upcoming educational campaign:

"There's an opportunity to give someone a break, so to speak. If there's something very careless, tickets will be given."

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia says bottom line: try to behave on a bike as if you're driving a car.

About raising the fine what, 3,000% - motor vehicle laws are made by the STATE, not by individual cities. But, Philly almost considers itself it's own state anyways....

Patrick Watson, one of the cyclists victimized by Dr. Thompson in the now-famous LA road rage case, is asking cyclists to write to the DA (Mary Stone, mstone@da.lacounty.gov) in support of strong sentencing. You should especially write if you are a resident of LA County, and a constituent. But this case is of national importance, so all letters are encouraged.

Mr. Watson writes:

"As some of you have no doubt heard, the jury has reached a verdict in the Thompson case. The jury found the defendant guilty on all seven counts charged:

- Count 1: Reckless Driving Causing Specified Injury (victim: Ron Peterson)
- Count 2: Battery with Serious Bodily Injury (victim: Ron Peterson)
- Count 3: Battery with Serious Bodily Injury (victim: Christian Stoehr)
- Count 4: Reckless Driving (victims: Patrick Watson and Josh Crosby)
- Count 5: Assault with a Deadly Weapon (victim: Ron Peterson)

NOTE: The jury also found that the defendant had committed a Special Allegation of "Causing Great Bodily Injury"

- Count 6: Assault with a Deadly Weapon (victim: Christian Stoehr)

NOTE: The jury also found that the defendant had committed a Special Allegation of "Causing Great Bodily Injury"

- Count 7: Mayhem

If you are unaware of this case and the verdict I copied some links below for you to review.

The range for the defendant is anywhere from probation to 10 years in prison and the District Attorney is anticipating that the defense will submit a boatload of letters to the judge and/or the probation department on his client's behalf. Please, if anyone from the community who has views on the sentencing you are also allowed to write the judge and/or probation officer.

As the defense will probably argue that no one else's opinion is relevant to this defendant, the District Attorney will indicate that we are offering letters toward the issue of general deterrence, in other words, simply because the defendant was in his car does not change the blunt nature of the unmitigated assault on the cyclists and that drivers everywhere must become aware that they have to share the road. To that end, anyone who would like to contribute a letter or an e-mail may send it to the District Attorney's office (below) or to the District Attorney herself, her e-mail address is also below. She will package all the letters and e-mails for us and submit them with her motion so the judge gets them all at once instead of a slow trickle. She plans to file the motion at the end of next week [Friday, November 20, Ed.] so it would be great if she had the letters/e-mails by then. And, yes, the more, the better.

Please address your letters appropriately, like we were able to touch on in court, which is that cyclists are not some alien breed of monsters that are claiming the streets, but regular people, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, police officers, bankers, lawyers, doctors, teachers.... So, if anyone is writing a letter, it would be nice if you could begin with an identifying fact such as what your occupation is and that you are a motorist and a cyclist. I truly appreciate everyone's commitment to this request and I hope you all feel the same as I do in making sure the defendant serves his appropriate time in prison for all 7 counts the jury found him guilty on and not just a slap on the wrist and probation. Please make your voice heard as I spent a great deal of my own personal time throughout this entire process and because I'm passionate about trying to make our community a better place to ride our bikes. Also, please forward on to your cycling community and make your voice heard throughout your area. This has resulted in National attention and the more letters from across the country the louder our voice will be heard."

Interesting as a possible model for other areas.

SD

This has been the year of the bicyclist in the South Bay, and it's going to get even better.

The San Jose City Council will adopt the city's first comprehensive bike plan on Tuesday, one that could double the number of lanes reserved for bicyclists from 250 to 500 miles over the next decade. Then next month the Valley Transportation Authority will set in motion a pilot project for riders on Caltrain and light rail to have bicycles available at selected stations to ride to job sites.

This follows the opening this summer of three pedestrian-bicycle bridges and several underpasses, plus trail extensions in the South Bay — more than $40 million in improvements that have turned Santa Clara County into the most bike-friendly region in the Bay Area.

The number of bicyclists remains small, but it's growing. Four years ago, San Jose estimated that 0.4 percent of all commuter trips here were made on a bicycle. Today that figure is 1.2 percent.

The national average is 0.5 percent, and San Jose currently ranks 15th in the nation for bike commuting.

But the goal is more ambitious — 5 percent in 10 years. That would put San Jose on a par with Portland, considered the biking mecca of the nation, with 6 percent of commuters on two wheels.

"Obviously, we're no Copenhagen," said San Jose Councilman Sam Liccardo, who often travels to city and VTA meetings on his blue Globe bike. "We've got a long way to go, but that's extraordinary progress in a short time."

San Jose officials say their bold plan will grab the attention of both riders and motorists. It calls for eliminating parking spaces and car lanes on 18 city corridors to accommodate bicyclists, such as on Hedding Street, Alma Avenue , Branham Lane, Monroe Street, Hillsdale Avenue and Monterey Highway.

New traffic signals would be installed to detect waiting bicyclists and trigger a green light. The pavement on some bike lanes would be painted a different color to make them more visible and safer for riders. And 5,000 lockers for bike storage are planned.

"This plan is ambitious," said Corinne Winter, executive director of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. "We need to ensure that hard commitments and funding streams follow. To turn this plan into a reality, the city will have to put dollars behind developing these bike facilities."

Transportation agencies are contributing more money for bicyclists than ever. The VTA has earmarked $160 million for bike and pedestrian improvements over the next 25 years in Santa Clara County, compared with its last big infusion of $30 million, set aside nine years ago. And the Metropolitan Transportation Commission will spend $1 billion on such improvements over the same period throughout the nine Bay Area counties, five times the amount it planned a few years ago.

The extra money being spent may seem like a lot, but it remains a small fraction of the $218 billion allocated for all transportation needs, from highways to trains to bus lines, over the next 25 years in the Bay Area.

By approving the bike plan, the city will be eligible for funding to add more lanes and facilities.

Next month the MTC is expected to approve VTA's request for $500,000 to cover the cost of the bike-sharing program. It would allow bikes to be picked up at Caltrain stations in San Jose, Mountain View and Palo Alto — reducing the number of passengers needing to bring them onboard to ride from the train to work or school. The pilot program could be under way by spring.

The cost to share a bike ranges from $40 a year in Washington, D.C., to $78 a year in Montreal.

Funding for the pilot program "will be the spark that jump-starts bike sharing in Santa Clara County," said Chris Augenstein, a deputy director of planning for the VTA.

To entice more commuters into bicycling, advocates say they need to provide assurances of a safer road. Having to cross wide intersections, dodge cars making right turns and avoid debris on the road all discourage people from riding a two-wheeler.

Another element of the bicycle plan is to conduct numerous safety campaigns throughout the county to urge bicyclists and motorists to simply get along.

"The goal here is to ask 'What about bikes?' every time a planning decision is made," said Richard Swent of Palo Alto, chairman of the VTA's bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee. "Many countries in Europe have much higher percentages of bicycling, helmet use is rare, yet cyclist injuries and fatalities are much lower than in this country. The difference is not in the facilities, but in people's attitudes and behaviors. This is by far the most difficult area in which to make progress."

What do you think it will take to get North Americans (or people in countries with similar socio-economic-geographic setups) out of cars and on to bikes?

The poll is multiple choice

Better urban planning? More infill housing and Jobs so that long commutes are less needed?

Bicyle Specific infrastructure? Bike lanes, sharrows, separate lanes, bike racks?

Cheaper, better quality bikes suited to dialy use?

Economic Pressure? Whether Market force or more likely Government forced? Higher Gas prices, Requiring business to charge for employee parking? Higher Vehicle registration? Tax Breaks? Lower Health care premiums? ???

Other....must be a lot that I havent covered

Ain't going to happen!

My belief is that it is going to take big time economic pressure to make any change, but that smart cities will work on the urban planning and bicycle planning now.
