I decided to turn to bicycle touring after a friend biked across country from Maryland to Oregon on his Surly Long Haul Trucker, and after I finished a 2,600 mile hike from Mexico to Canada. 5 months of hiking with 30+ pounds on my back was one hell of a journey, and I loved every minute, but hearing of my friends travels on bike seemed so much smoother, faster, easier on the knees...

So I am taking a break from long distance hiking and I'm putting my energy into biycle touring, which I feel is much more versatile. I can take trips to America's midwest and other areas where hiking trails are limited, and I can see the heartland of my country.

I would love to fly my bike out to Iceland, and do the rim of the island. I've heard of this being done but have little to no information on that.

Also, I am a strong supporter of the "bike everywhere and leave your car at home" philosophy. I live in Philadelphia, and parking-like every major city- is a nightmare. So I was happy to find a bike that will allow me to safely and comfortably get around. I have an old steel road bike, but it's set up for quick jaunts and has no cargo capacity.

I am looking forward to hearing of your trips, ideas and advice. I'll be posting info of my plans and ideas too.

ive been on the single speed forum for a bit but figured i should introduce myself here:

im prepared to get criticized for my choices here but ive been road riding with upper level components and clippless pedals since i was about 10 (1995-96 range) and i was ready to try something new.

ive been riding an older 853 steel road bike built up as a single speed for a while now and felt bad i had an aluminum frame with campy record/chorus components on it that was not being used, so i decided to build a nice fixed gear conversion with what i have. (plus new wheels and pedals)

specs:
frame: scatantte xrl 7000 series aluminum(i know its nothing special, but its got sentimental value)
fork: weyless carbon
headseat: cane creek integrated
stem: wayless carbon 1 1/8
bars: wayless 31.8 ergo drop
brake leaver: cane creek cross top
brake: campy chorus (from my first campy groupo )
bar tape: bontreger grippy tape
seat post: campy record carbon
saddle: selle italia slk
bottom bracket: campy chorus square taper (10spd)
cranks: campy chorus (10spd)
chainring: 42 tooth campy (brand new, found it in my parts bin)
chain: sachs platted (cant remember the model #, my family stockpiled some 8spd stuff)
pedals: mks lite (i have some eggbeaters on my mountain bike that may find there way on here someday)
retention: fixie power grips (i know i know ive always wanted to try them...)
front hub: campy record
rear hub: white industries eccentric
cog: white ind. 16t
rims: dt swiss 1.2
spokes: dt swiss double butted 3x
tires: bonterger race lite

i know for the price of the wheels i could have had a track frame, but i still would have needed to buy track wheels, and this solution gives me the ability to switch my bike to a free wheel, or even back to a multi speed. i also have an old yakota frame and another 853 steel frame that could wear the fixie garb. options options :)

My name is Andraya, from Edmonton, Alberta. I have to be honest, my only recent bike experience has been teaching my three year old to ride a trike lol. The other day I came across a very cool, old looking adult sized tricycle in the dumpster by my house and thought "why not?". I've wanted to buy a bike for many years but have never had enough extra cash to get a decent one so I held off. With my daughter old enough to ride a bit now and my recent choice to go car free this trike appears to be an ideal match for me and I am anxious to learn both how to restore it and how to make an honest go of riding as a transportation method!

I hope to be able to get to know you all soon and start learning from all you seasoned pros!

Hello everybody,

I am from Lausanne, Switzerland and after several years spent studying in Japan, I'm back in Switzerland to teach Japanese language and culture at University of Geneva.
I've been commuting by bicycle for a long time but I really discoverd the joy of cycle touring while in Japan. I am not really into road racing or mountain biking, but definitely into lightly loaded touring (say, 2-4 days tours). I am particulary fond of "randonneur" type bikes, vintage 650B French and Japanese ones being my favorites. Those being way too expensive for my budget, I enjoy my touring passion on a modified MTB Cycletech Andale that might not be vintage, but that definitely takes me where I want to ride.

See you all in the forums!

I've run across this board quite a few times. Decided to become a bit more active. Between my job as the GM of a bike shop and the building I don't have too much time to cruise the forums. I handcraft frames here in Columbus. One man shop. One bike at a time! If your into frame building you've most likely heard of Doug Fattic. I use one of his Jigs. Feel free to swing by my site stanridgespeed.com

Have a good one today and stay safe if your on bike!

Hi, everyone! I'm Rachel and originally from Brevard but I currently reside in Orlando. I've had my Cannondale F300 for a little over 10 years and have enjoyed where I've been with it. One particular place where I thought I was going to die but loved the experience was Tsali. I would love to do it again and one goal of mine is to complete the trail once more. This time I will be more prepared! I do regret the few years where I didn't ride as much as I could have however I've recently gotten back into routine of going out and riding on weeknights and weekends. I recently got a Trek 7200 WSD and I am enjoying the hybrid because it's a much easier ride, especially on my back. I ride it when I just want to relax and explore.

My name is Anthony Siracusa, and I am on a year-long fellowship traveling the world studying bicycle cultures (www.watsonfellowship.org). I've been to Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Britain over the past four months, and I'm currently based in Melbourne, Australia where I'm working with Bicycle Victoria. In the next 7 months I will travel to China, Guatemala and Mexico. I've actually been a member of the bikeforums in the past, but it has literally been years since I've browsed the site. In the past I have spent a lot of time following the mechanical threads, but now I hope to peruse the threads oriented towards bike advocacy and bicycle cultures.

If you have any info on China or Latin America feel free to send it my way at your convenience.

Cheers!

I'm just this year getting into biking and doing my first Tri this Dec. in Phuket, Thailand. I signed up for the tri as a way to keep me motivated to lose weight and get in shape--I've dropped over 50lbs this year and plan on finishing the tri (1800m, 55k, 12k) in 4 hours! Wish me luck.

I ride a Trek x700--bought it from a friend. Have no clue about it, really. I'll get it tuned up before the race and then pray that I don't have any issues.
